5 Mental Stress Reducing Habits to Bring More Calm Into Your Life

The hectic pace of modern life can be tough on your mind, body, and soul. The result? You’re pretty frazzled! Fortunately,

it’s not all bad news; there are plenty of things you can do to minimize the negative effects of stress and maximize the positive ones. Here are five habits that can significantly reduce your mental stress and bring more calm into your life.

1) Identify the Cause

Identifying your stressors is an important first step. It’s easy to get caught up in stressful thoughts and not realize that your body is becoming tense, but practicing mindfulness and taking note of your stress signals can keep them from getting out of control.

Identify what triggers your fight or flight response. Is it a person? A situation? Are you spending too much time at work or with one person who always seems to bring you down? Do you need more sleep? If so, make a plan for how to get more rest. Whatever you do, don’t ignore your stress—it will only become worse if left unchecked.

2) Smile

If you want to instantly brighten your mood, try smiling. It’s a simple trick that can help you feel better and make other people around you happier as well.

When was the last time you smiled genuinely at another person? Give it a try! You might be surprised by how much of an impact such a small gesture can have on someone else’s day.

3) Drink Water

Staying hydrated is good for your physical health, but it’s also important for mental clarity. Researchers have found that dehydration can lead to stress and anxiety.

In one study published in The Journal of Physiology, students who were given just two glasses of water prior to a test saw their heart rates decrease by 5-10 beats per minute — a decrease that remained even during strenuous tests.

4) Get Fresh Air

Getting some fresh air is a great way to reduce stress and energize your body.

It can be as simple as going for a walk in your neighborhood or walking around your building, but we all know that’s not enough sometimes.

5) Meditate

The great thing about meditation is that you can do it almost anywhere and it only takes a few minutes.

There are tons of techniques out there, so you’re sure to find one that suits your personality (and your schedule). Headspace is a great way to learn how to meditate, as well as calm your mind. It also offers guided sessions, should you want someone else’s voice in your head. Once you get used to meditating regularly, it makes a difference in all aspects of life.

Conclusion

Yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises are great options for reducing stress. When added into your routine on a regular basis, these techniques can help you learn how to manage difficult situations more effectively and even avoid them altogether. It’s always a good idea to consult with your doctor before beginning any exercise program or drastically changing your diet, especially if you have high blood pressure or diabetes.
